the influence of music
ok here's the setting, you're sitting at this place having a burger, or taco, or whatever, and this song(s) come(s) over the sound system and you are taken back to another time and place. what song would that be for you?
for me it would be a couple of songs by the cars, or something like that. here's a list of some of those songs by the cars:
good times roll
my best friend's girl
just what i needed
shake it up
these songs would put me back in time. maybe back to the skating rink on a saturday, or something like that.
where would you be?

In high school I was into the 80's hair band groups, Ratt, Crue, Poison, etc. So when I hear those it makes me think of high school.
For the next 7 years I was on the rodeo circuit and we listened to a lot of Chris Ledoux. When I hear those songs it reminds me of driving all night long, driving 1500 miles in a weekend, and the thrill of throwing a steer faster than anyone else. Or missing the steer and busting my tail in front of everyone.
"Time For Me to Fly" by REO Speedwagon
"Always Something There to Remind Me" by Naked Eyes
"Missing You" by John Waite
Anything from AC/DC's "Back in Black" album
Just about anything from the early 80's takes me back to those carefree High School & College Days
I have been resisting commenting on this because my taste in music is sooo nerdy (except Christian music, in which I am much younger than my years).
"Reminiscing" by Little River Band always takes me back to high school years. I still love it. They had some good hits back then. Another one was "Cool Change" (which is not embraced by churches of Christ!).
Any song from GREASE sends me rocking and rolling...I love that movie. Olivia still looks good today!
In my single years I turned to Barry Manilow. I know... CHEESE... but he knew how to put loneliness into beautiful melodies and heart breaking words.
I grew up a country boy, though, so I equally loved Waylon, Hank Jr, and George Jones. I can do a pretty good George Jones imitation while playing my guitar (but no one wants to hear it).
When I hear REO Speedwagon, I think of the Hi-Infidelity 8-track that my friend Les had. First, it was nearly contraband on the Bible college campus. Second, he wondered if he could train his voice to sing that high. I thought that was some great music, too.
I hope Mike doesn't come back and read this, he will make fun of me for sure.
those were great comments. thanks guys.
i could've gone on longer on my post but i didn't want to take up the whole screen (jd), lol. no just kidding.
i do like other groups, not jsut the cars, but i was listening to a radio station near birmingham on my way back from n.a. on the return trip of the dennis evacuation, and found this great retro station, now i can't even remember the call letters, and they were playing the scorpions, the cars, bryan adams, etc. it was really cool. d1 even commented, "at least you found a good radio station."
i'm with you soren, but i did not got to college, i joined the navy. i listened to those 80s bands.
now i listen primarily to christian radio, and only listen to country, and 80s pop when there is not a christian station in range. however, i prefer the newer style of christian music like the newsboys, third day, casting crowns... i guess they have the same sound as the 80s bands that i like.
again, thanks for the comments. keep 'em comin'.
i'm not sure dad. anything i guess. i like what u like and others like america and the eagles. i wasn't born when ur stuff was "cool". I like though it may not be cool to other kids except me. it's funny when u were dancing in the car while driving us home from mawmaw and pawpaws. i was laughing inside of me!!! well i guess i'll see u when u get home.
lov ya,
Kristin
Hey Ken
This weekend we took our teens to YOUTH FOR CHRIST in Dothan. On the way back the kids were sleepy and so was I. I was dailing around the radio and found "Saturday Night Dance Party". We listened to it all the way home. Here's some of the 'hits' I exposed our children to (forgive me!): She Works Hard For the Money, YMCA, Brick House, Play That Funky Music White Boy, You Should Be Dancing, Disco Inferno, Freak Out. You get the idea. I loved every minute of it. It was kind of hard doing the YMCA hand motions with one hand.
you mean you kept a hand on the wheel? you gotta live dangerously, jd! those are some "oldies but goodies" now, aren't they?
those even make me think of going to the skating rink.
i forgot to ask, "what station were you listening to?"
