a suprise guest last night

guess who we had stop by and talk to our youth group last night? he is the neighbor of one our members. still no clue?

this guy:
jake peavy. ace of the san diego padres.

he came and spoke to our youth, but i think i was the most excited one to see him. eventhough he set a franchise record 17 k's in one game against my braves.

he talked about the night he "got the call" to come up to the bigs. he had played in jackson, ms, and then the manager called him to his room and told him to pack his bags. 'mind you this was about midnight, and he was getting on a plane to fly to san dog to pitch against the new york yankees HAWK!! PUH!! (that's me clearing my throat and spitting out that wretched team's name)

not to mention he was pitching against future hall of famer roger "the rocket" clemens on his mlb debut.

he spoke about pitching to mike piazza and his first mlb strike out, which was derek jeter. he spoke about striking out barry "no i didn't take steroids" bonds. yeah right, and if i pumped weights for three months in the off season i would look like that, too.

it was neat to hear his experiences and how he shared that with our youth. he is not an eloquent speaker, but he is a real guy, and it was neat to hear him share those things.

have you ever met some one famous? how did you feel shaking their hand, and such?

Yeah he may not be the most eloquent of speakers but you are definately right on about being genuine. I think that that is one of the things that I am most proud of with him. The 16K night wasn't too shabby either ;')>

k2,

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Thought I'd check you out ... wow, Peavy, he was on my Fantasy baseball team. I can't even imagine. The closest I've got to anything like that was catching a Gary Matthews Jr. foulball at the Ballpark in Arlington.

hey ken. finally found your blog again. lost the bookmark to it somehow. but, sounds like you had an interesting evening. i know what you mean about feelin weird meeting famous people. i've met quite a few goin to dragoncon in atlanta and i think i've felt every akward situation there is.

when gettin autographs there were people that i wanted to talk to but they were nervous (think they were just overwhelmed by the number of geeks in one place), been people that were talkative to us but we were to nervous, but then there were the few that when you are around you could feel calm enough to talk to. adam baldwin (he was jayne from the tv series Firefly and the movie Serenity). he was a cool guy. talked alot to us and even donated all the money he made off autograph signing to hurricane katrina (i forget exactly how much it was but i think it was over $20,000. only 2 actors that were there did that, him and Tricia Hefler (one of the cylon chicks from the new Battlestar Galactica). THEN, there was the guy that was actually IN Lord of the Rings that came up to me and told me my Aragorn costume was amazing...that blew me away.

anyway, i gotta go eat some breakfast and go get to the gym so i can get as big as barry bonds and the others...lol. see you in a few days.
